On Think Tanks was founded in mid 2010.+ It has evolved from a blog into a global platform dedicated to study and support policy research and policy research centres, or think tanks. The members of the On Think Tanks Team and its Advisory Board are spread out across 6 continents!
Since then, On Think Tanks’ contributors have worked very hard to come up with and share the best ideas and advice for think tanks and their funders. We have:
- Published over 800 articles,
- Which were viewed well over 330,000 times in 2016,
- by people all over the world.
On Think Tanks is no longer a virtual space. The first On Think Tanks Annual Conference in 2017 is a testament of this:
Growth has been rather stable since the beginning with new audiences joining every week. Most importantly, though, new collaborators, partners and supporters have strengthened out community.
But growth for growth’s sake has not been On Think Tanks’ main concern. Rather, we have tried to maintain the platform’s intellectual autonomy, never afraid to challenge the consensus, when it felt like it was necessary to do so, and eager to give a voice to think tanks themselves (and increasingly, this means film!).
Together, too, we have developed new initiatives that share the same objectives: improve policymaking and policy outcomes. On Think Tanks has developed the On Think Tanks School, a Fellowship Programme, the Data Visualisation Competition, the Open Think Tank Directory, a Working Paper Series, the On Think Tanks TV, and many more.
As you may imagine, it takes time and money to run On Think Tanks. Demand for new and better ideas from think tanks and funders is growing and we need to be able to meet it.
We feel that we have developed an identifiable value proposition, in the sense that we have been able to make an important contribution to think tanks and their supporters.
And this is not just our opinion:
I’ve met people here that I’ve worked with for many years and it’s incredibly interesting to connect and exchange.

For instance, the University of Bath hosted the On Think Tanks 2017 Annual Conference in London and it has partnered with Universidad del Pacifico in Peru and On Think Tanks to launch the On Think Tanks Working Paper Series. Most importantly, income from the voluntary subscriptions will help to achieve a better balance across several regions of the world.
